Otters and Fisheries
Dec 15, 2019
Otter numbers have been recovering across the country since almost becoming extinct in the 1970s and have been increasing their range in the Colne catchment over the past decade. The presence of otters along the River Chess is very exciting and demonstrates the remarkable recovery of this once critically endangered species.
We appreciate that the presence of otters may be of concern to fishery owners. We agree with the Angling Trust’s Predator Action Group’s over-arching strategy to create and maintain healthy aquatic environments where balanced populations of fish and otters can co-exist in a sustainable manner. The Angling Trust have Fisheries Management Advisors who can provide advice on appropriate management techniques such as otter fencing and funding support through the Angling Improvement Fund. We would recommend that fisheries approach the Angling Trust for advice.
It is important to remind anyone fishing the river or adjacent stillwaters that they need to do so responsibly, and take all discarded fishing line and litter away with them for appropriate disposal. Trapping, injuring or killing an otter - whether deliberately or through carelessness - is a serious offence under both The Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations (2010) and the Wildlife & Countryside Act 1981.
Here are the most up to date guidelines for otters and stillwater fisheries (PDF, 935 KB). The document also shows otter field signs in comparison with those of mink. We would be keen to know if you have seen any evidence of otters or mink on the river; please do get in touch.
